Uganda Women’s cricket team resurrected from a loss to Hong Kong yesterday -Sunday-, to put up a dominant performance against Namibia in game six, to secure their spot in the finals.
The Pearls, who had won two and lost three games in the series, put on a clinical display with both bat and ball to outclass Namibia by a comprehensive margin.
With this win, the Pearls have cemented their position as second on the table with six points and will now face off against Namibia once again in the much-awaited final.
Namibia won the toss and elected to bat first, but it was Uganda’s bowlers who dominated the early proceedings.
Irene Alumo and Consy Aweko picked up two wickets each, as Namibia struggled to find momentum. Adri van der Merwe top-scored for Namibia with 21 runs, but the team could only manage a total of 77/7 in their 20 overs.
In response, Uganda got off to a shaky start as they lost their first three wickets for just nine runs.
However, Kevin Awino played a crucial knock of 28 runs and was supported by Phiona Khulume, who remained unbeaten on 20 runs.
Aweko’s quickfire 11 runs in 10 balls towards the end helped Uganda reach the target with 8 balls to spare.
Namibia’s Wilka Mwatile and Van Zyl Irene picked up three wickets between them, but it wasn’t enough to stop Uganda from securing a vital win.
With this win, Uganda earned two points to add on their four, while Namibia failed to earn any points which could have set up a final against UAE.
The stage is now set for the final match of the series, and Uganda will face Namibia Women’s team again on Tuesday afternoon, at 15:30 EAT.
Uganda will be looking to continue their winning form, while Namibia will be determined to bounce back and clinch a victory in the crucial game.
The Pearls, who secured victory in the Victoria Series on their home ground less than two weeks ago, are now eager to win this title as well. This will serve as validation for the contracts they signed in March earlier this year.
