The Uganda women’s beach handball senior national team has intensified its preparations for the upcoming 2nd African Beach Games, set to take place in Hammamet, Tunisia from June 23rd to 30th, 2023.

With head coach Isma Bazanye at the helm, the team is determined to leave a lasting impression in the tournament and bring honor to their nation by making a triumphant comeback to the continental stage.

Currently in a residential training camp at Ndejje University’s main campus in Luwero, the team of 15 players is undergoing rigorous training sessions.

In a recent announcement, their coach revealed the team captains who will lead the charge in this tournament.

Scovia Lamunu, from Prisons Handball Club, has been appointed as the team captain, with Mutesi Nasiimu, representing Victoria University, named as the vice captain.

Bazanye praised Lamunu’s leadership and responsibility, highlighting her ability to guide and inspire her teammates.

“She [Lamunu] is a good leader, and very responsible judging from her personality. And with that, she is capable to steer her teammates into the right direction.” He said.

He also commended the team’s dedication to training, emphasizing their commitment and willingness to give their all.

“The girls’ response to training is good, they are giving in their all and that’s all that matters right now. We started with a much bigger squad than this and am happy that the team has started to take shape.” He added

On the other hand Mutesi possesses a noteworthy talent for balancing her involvement in both netball and handball. She plays for NIC, the East African champions in netball.

The duo’s leadership, experience, and dedication will play a pivotal role in guiding the team throughout the tournament.

Team Captain Scovia Lamunu earlier today

Talking to the media, Lamunu said the team’s impressive performance poses a challenge for the coach in making final selections, as the players’ dedication and skill make it difficult to determine the ultimate roster.

“As a team we connect so much with each other and that sisterly-love is reflected even when we are on court. We have passion for the sport and that has made us become a great team. All of us are doing our best and I think we are performing well and it will be hard for the coach to decide on who makes the final team.” She said.

With their departure for Tunisia scheduled for next Thursday, the team is focused on fine-tuning their skills and strategies before the competition begins.

Nasiimu, the vice captain expressed her gratitude for being a part of the camp and She eagerly looks forward to their goal of qualifying for the world games.

“I am so greatful to be part of the team in camp right now, and we are looking forward to qualify for the world games as well. I am enjoying the camp, we are training hard and visibly we are much better than when we had just come.” An excited Nasiimu commented

Nasiimu Mutesi showcases her shooting prowess during a rigorous drill at the team camp today.

To ensure optimal performance, the team will be trimmed down to a 10-player squad by the end of this week.

Beyond their intensive training, the team is actively seeking financial support from potential partners and sponsors.

While the National Council of Sports has already provided assistance, additional support will help alleviate the financial burden and allow the team to focus solely on their performance.

The upcoming 2nd African Beach Games will be a platform for the women’s senior national team for Beach Handball in Uganda to showcase their talent and compete against top-level teams from across Africa.

The tournament presents an excellent opportunity for the team to gain exposure, foster international collaborations, and ultimately promote the growth of beach handball in Uganda.
