The All Africa Senior Championships 2022 kicked off at 10am Monday morning in Lugogo indoor stadium with host Uganda taking on Benin.

Brian Kasirye, Israel Wanagaliya and Friday Attaman faced off with Benin’s Carlos Charles Ahouangassi, Oswald Ash Fano and Preferet Adomahou to give Uganda a 3-0 lead in the singles games.

Amos Muyanja teamed up with Friday Attaman in the men’s doubles as Brian Kasirye twinned with Israel Wanagaliya to beat the Benin shuttlers 5-0.

Egypt beat Cameroon 5-0, Reunion lost to Algeria 5-0 and Zimbabwe failed to show up for their game against Mauritius.

“Uganda is becoming the capital of badminton in Africa” President of the BCA Michael Bau emphasized as he officiated the commencement of the event.

In attendance also was the Chairman of the Uganda National Council of Sports Mr. Don Rukare and President of The Uganda Badminton Association Annet Nakamya.

Standard Operating Procedures to protect against COVID-19 were followed as spectators were restricted from the event.

Don Rukare encouraged other Uganda Federations to emulate the UBA if they are to host such tournaments.

In the women’s tier, South Africa lost to Reunion 2-3 WS1 (21-15, 21-12) Deidre Laurens Jordaan vs Leperlier Estelle, WS2 (23-21, 12-21, 18-21) Diane Olivier vs Mathilde Lepetit, WS3 (11-21, 21-9, 14-21) Demi Botha vs Audrey Lebon.

Then in the doubles, Amy Ackerman and Deidre Laurens Jordaan beat Audrey Lebon and Leperlier Estelle ( 21-13, 21-3) in 20 minutes while Demi Botha and Diane Olivier scored (21-16, 15-21, 12-21) against Ly-Hoa Chai and Mathilde Lepetit in a game that lasted 35 minutes.

The Egyptian ladies also got a walkover against Zimbabwe to earn a 5-0 win.

Brenda Awor & Tracy Naluwooza bt Halla Bouksani & Linda Mazri  [Alg] 21_13, 21-18

Hussina Kobugabe & Fadilah Shamika lost to Mounib Celia & Tanina Violetta Mammeri [17-21, 14-21]
