Kenyan Comedian and TikTok sensation Meshack Kiprop Biwott popularly known as Arap Uria couldn’t end his year any better than meeting his idol, the legendary English commentator Peter Drury at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Arap is part of a World Cup TikTok campaign – the sounds of the world cup-, where fans recreate their most memorable commentaries of the World Cup, a deal he landed with Supersport this year in August.
He rose to fame in 2020 by parodying trending sounds on the internet though his entry into Digital Content dates back to 2019 when he created videos lip-syncing Kenyan Politicians.
Meshack is the firstborn in a family of seven, and is a qualified Teacher of Geography and Mathematics, making him only a fraction of those that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic that had schools on lockdown.
However, according to Kiprop, this came as a blessing in disguise, since it gave him the time to explore the world of Digital content creation, where he came up with a masterpiece character, to lip-sync along with Peter Drury’s voice.
He now stands out with a signature look of metallic mugs around his ears to mimic headphones, white facial markings for grey hair, an oversized rugged jacket, and a bucket hat over his head, a look that has had him christened “the Kenyan Drury”.
The football fan now boasts 746,200 followers on TikTok, 390,000 subscribers on YouTube, and 94,900 followers on Twitter, among other social media platforms thanks to his videos that he says have drawn non-football lovers to the sport.
“…you all know Peter Drury is the god of commentary. He does it best. I like the lines he creates from an iconic moment in the game. I didn’t realize how much power social media had until the videos reached Peter Drury.”
“I’ve built a name from making the videos, and I have been able to partner with different companies and brands which has changed my life to a certain extent.” He said in an interview.
As an influencer for the Sounds of the World Cup campaign on TikTok, Arap Uria had the opportunity to travel for the international tournament in Qatar and has since been on his quest to meet Peter Drury who is also in the middle East as part of the commentary team.
Efforts to have the two meet earlier this year in April were futile as Peter Drury had to be in Doha for the World Cup draws, during the agreed period.
Arap’s wish was granted on Saturday evening when he got linked up with his idol and he shared pictures on his Twitter account, of the two having a light moment.
The pictures with Peter Drury have since gained up to 140,000 likes, and 24,000 retweets on Twitter.
Peter Drury is a British sports commentator who currently works for NBC Sports as the lead commentator for its Premier League coverage in the United States of America though he has been popular in many parts of Africa for his poetic commentary in the English Premier League.
