UCU Vs SPORT-S

18:25, 21:25, 20:25 (3-0)

Sport-S continued their dominant streak in the National Club Championships, securing their third consecutive title on Wednesday evening at the Old Kampala Arena.

They faced off against their perennial rivals, Uganda Christian University (UCU), in a rescheduled final match.

Sport-S, defending champions since 2021, showcased their prowess right from the start by winning the first set convincingly with a seven-point margin, 18-25.

They didn’t let up and maintained their dominance throughout the game, securing victory in all three sets.

Thon Makar, a key player for Sport-S, continued to shine by disrupting UCU’s blocks, while middle blockers Sam Engau, and Emmanuel Okia took turns in erecting formidable blocks against the University team.

UCU played without center player Ian Akampa who is nursing an ankle injury.

As a result, Vincent Odeke was tasked with the sole responsibility of managing the UCU center attack, even though Nespal Angiro remained effective in both the wing and backcourt attacks.

The rescheduled final between Sport-S and UCU was necessitated by a dramatic turn of events during the initial match in Mbarara.

Sport-S had won two sets, but UCU made a comeback by taking the third set. As the match was played outdoors with no provision for night games, it had to be rescheduled for another day, which ultimately led to Sport-S’ triumphant victory.

Sport-S’ dominance in the National Club Championships continues, with UCU remaining their closest competitors.

Notably, last year’s hosts, the Orange Block Busters, were conspicuously absent from this year’s National Club Championships.

The Iganga based team, which had organized the tournament in the previous edition, cited a lack of funds as the primary reason for their absence.

Benon Mugisha, Sport-S’ head coach, expressed his satisfaction with the win and noted that it would serve as motivation for the upcoming season, set to be launched at the same Old Kampala Arena this Saturday.

In the women’s Tier of the National Club Championship, Sport-S ladies reached the final but ultimately lost to the Ndejje Elites after a surprising victory over their rivals, KCCA ladies, in the semi-finals.

KCCA and Sport-S Ladies will face off in a league opener this Saturday.

However, KCCA may have to compete without their captain, Eunice Emuron, who sustained an injury during the semi-finals in Mbarara.
