Orange Block Busters volleyball club Head Coach Lawrence Yakan Guma, and his assistant Jacob Ssenoga have resigned from duty, days before the National Volleyball League opener.

The development comes after OBB’s 3-0 home defeat to Sport S in the National Club Championship final on Sunday in Iganga.

The club announced the news yesterday evening in a Press Release posted on their official Twitter page.

“Orange Block Busters Volleyball Club, Coach Yakan Lawrence, and his assistant Ssenoga Jacob have reached a mutual agreement to part ways. The technical staff will handle the duties at the moment as we begin the search for a replacement. The Coaches are a big part of our history and we treasure their distinguished contributions. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.” The statement read.

However, Yakan clarified to Afrosports that he voluntarily stepped down, and was not dismissed by the club.

“I was not fired. I stepped down from the job willingly because of personal reasons. ” He said on a phone conversation.

The Uganda-born Rwandan steward was appointed Head Coach a year ago by the Iganga outfit along with a set of players for the 2021/22 season. The rookies climaxed their debut season as Uganda National Volleyball League champions.

Yakan started coaching in 2019 as an assistant at Gisagara Volleyball Club in Rwanda, where he had also been unveiled as a player under Joseph Ndahiro.

He recently finished an FIVB level two coaching course in Nairobi and the club had agreed to prolong his stay at the Shukran Camp for two more years, only for the sudden dismissal to emerge.

During his tenure at OBB, he won the National Volleyball League, the Kabale Open, and the Nkumba Open in July. Among the signings he made are Skipper Jonathan Tumukunde from Nemostars and receive attacker Brian Atuhaire from Sport S.

Set to leave the club as well is Yakan’s assistant Ssenoga Jacob who has been pivotal in the club’s recruitment of raw talent from the high schools “nursery”, where he is a gem.

OBB will be facing Sport-S yet again as the National Volleyball League serves off on Saturday 10th at the MTN Arena in Lugogo.

Meanwhile, Afrosports has learned that Uganda Volleyball Federation’s SOC Deo Nsereko and Chairman of the Referees Commission Innocent Komakech have reportedly resigned from their positions though an official communication from the two parties are yet to be released.

“Dear managers, I would like to say thanks to all of you in this forum for all the co-operation given to me as Chair referees commission till now. I will step aside from the position in good faith. To all those I rubbed shoulders with during my term of office, I am deeply sorry! I am around still as a board member and can be reached anytime. Cheers.” A message allegedly from Komakech surfaced.
