NIC and Kampala University rule East Africa Netball Club Championship

The 20th Edition of East Africa Netball Club championship successfully climaxed on Saturday 14th May 2022 at Kamwokya Community Sports Centre.

National Insurance Corporation Netball Club defended the title of Women category after beating Kampala Capital City Authority Netball Club 44-35 on an epic final that attracted thousands of fans at the venue.

Kampala University also defended their trophy in Male category, they played in a round robin format but it needed KU to wait until the last game they played against WOB, that tense game ended in a square 31-31 but the former had a better goal average compared to the latter on the log. Both teams, KU and WOB finished with five points.

For starters, the tournament had 13 teams in total, nine for women and four were men’s teams coming from Uganda(Host), Zanzibar and Tanzania, the tournament ran for seven successful days at one venue and the the final fixtures for men and women were streamed and broadcasted live on Federation YouTube channel and Salt TV respectively. The first of it’s kind in history of this tournament.

The final was graced by a number of dignitaries, including; Uganda Olympic Committee President Dr. Donald Rukare and National Council of Sports Chairperson, Ambrose Tashobya and he was the guest of honor.

National Insurance Corporation Netball Club secured their 18th trophy since this new version of EANA Championship was introduced in 1999, only Prisons had denied them title in 2016 and 2017.

However, Kampala University won it three times.

Jesca Achan, the Prison Netball Club mid court player, was voted as the Most Valuable player of the tournament while Stella Oyella, of NIC took the topscorers’ gong, the unstoppable shooter, netted 244 goals in six games.

At Men’s side, Anana M. Yasin from JKU (Zanzibar) was the topscorer, he scored 83 goals.

The 21st edition will be hosted by Kenya Next year, NIC, KCCA, Prisons and Makindye Weyonje going to represent Uganda in Female Category.
