New Uganda sports Council board inaugurated in Kampala

The State Minister of Sports, Denis Obua on 3rd March 2022 inaugurated the New Uganda National Council of Sports Board to serve for a two year term from February 2022 to 2024.

The New Board referred to as the Council is headed by Ambrose Tashobya as the Chairman of the Board. Tashobya has been at the helm of Uganda Basketball Federation and Uganda Olympic Committee for over three decades.
He brings on board unmatched experience in sports administration and management having served in various positions nationally and Internationally.

Tashobya takes over from Dr. Donald Rukare who served in the same capacity for the last 2 years (2020-2022).

The Minister of Sports during the inauguration ceremony tasked the new board to walk the talk of moving sports in Uganda forward.

‘A poor infrastructure is a thorn in the flesh of Uganda sports, Namboole, Teryet, Nakivubo War Memorial stadium, Akii Bua and Buhinga stadiums are in the Offings to close this gap, by the grace of God, all these projects must be completed.’ Obua stated.

Obua also reaffirmed that Cabinet has agreed to increase the budget of the sports sub-sector from 10 Billion to 25 Billion Shillings.

According to Obua, the increment will take effect in the this financial year 2022/23.

Previously, the sports sub-sector was receiving 18 billion shillings of which 10 Billion was ring-fenced to the Federation of Uganda Football Association-FUFA, and the balance shared among other federations. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the budget was further reduced to 10 billion in the 2021/22 financial year.

‘We need to fast track the Uganda sports policy so that we move the sports sector forward.’ Obua concluded

On his part, the outgoing Chairman, Dr. Donald Rukare thanks the Minister for entrusting him with the stewardship of the National council of sports in the last two years.

‘Thank you very much to members of the outgoing board, the Secretariat and welcome the new board to the council. ‘ Rukare said.

In Rukare’s tenure, Uganda had the best performance at the global stage despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Ugandan athletes broke World records and won flour medals at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo emerging second In Africa.

‘COVID-19 taught us a new way of administering sports (virtually) and I encourage the new board to keep that up, its been an absolute pleasure for me to have served the council.’ Rukare concluded

Tashobya’s first hurdle together with Dr. Patrick Ogwel and Dr. Donald Rukare will be at the the 2022 Commonwealth Games, in Birmingham from July 28th, 2022 untill Aug 8th, 2022Basketballg, Badminton, Gymnastics, Judo, Triathlon, Boxing, Squash, Wrestling, Athletics, Cycling and Lawn Tennis, Para Athletics, Para-swimming, Para Powerlifting, Wheelchair Basketball, 3×3 Basketball, badminton teams, table tennis and weightlifting among others are some of the disciplines that are supposed to represent the country at the games.

I thank the outgoing board for the heads way met, our target is to ensure harmony within sports federations and expand on the the sports facilities in the country.’ Tashobya said.
