President of the Uganda Boxing Federation Moses Muhangi lost to Cameroon’s Bertrand Mendouga in a contest to become president of the Africa Boxing Confederation, an election that was held at a congress meeting in Algiers, Algeria’s capital on the 16th of July.

Muhangi affirmed there has been proposals for him to be a part of the board, a request that he declined.

“There has been propositions for me to join the board as a member of the board or as the vice president of the confederation, but for me, most people need to understand how I work.”

“Am not after positions or titles. I want to be in a committee where I have impact, able to make decisions and implement them. So me being on a board whose president is some one else makes it hard for me to implement my work plans and methods so it’s best that I step aside.” He said.

Muhangi attributed his lose to the many dynamics that were at play during the election. He said his counterpart was voted because of emotions since he has been within the circles of boxing for long and this was a good way to reward him into retiring peacefully.

Cameroon’s boxing federation boss Bertrand Mendouga emerged winner with more than half of the total votes – 21/40-.

The 65 year old Cameroonian has been president of the Cameroon boxing federation for the past 17 years and will now be at the helm of Africa’s boxing body for the next four years.

Muhangi however pledged to support Mendouga despite saying the latter doesn’t deserve the position because of his “iron hand” on the Cameroon boxers, in a statement before the election day.

“We will support Mendouga to run his -four year- term.” He said, adding on that, ” But I had great support as well. Having about 10 countries vote for me is a big issue and huge for Uganda as well.”

Muhangi got 9 votes while Algeria’s Abdelnour Fazil garnered 10 votes in the election.

Moses Muhangi has been president of the Uganda Boxing Federation since 2018 and in January, he was declared unopposed, retaining his sit for another -four year- term, a decision that received protest from other contestants in the race.

In the same interview, Muhangi revealed that his federation is preparing to receive the President of the world boxing federation Umar Kremlev and delegates, who will be paying a courtesy visit in December to do a ground breaking of the boxing academy that the latter offered to Uganda.
