Uganda Boxing Federation President, Moses Muhangi has lashed out at people discrediting his re-election as sleepers.
Moses Muhangi returned unopposed in the on going 2022 Uganda Boxing Federation Elections.
Bruno Sserunkuuma the returning officer for UBF elections last Saturday (January 15th) confirmed the closure of the nomination deadline that saw Muhangi and his top executive members return unopposed for a 4-year tenure 2022 -2026.
Zana Boxing Club’s chairman Stephen Ssembuya, Nyakana and Salim Uhuru the Uganda professional boxing commission President and Mayor Kampala Central division have distanced themselves from the election.
Stephen Ssembuya’s efforts to stand against Muhangi was impractical after failing to meet the minimum qualifications to stand for the UBF presidency.
“Nyakana and his allies have to accept that their days in boxing elapsed three years back, they claim I made constitution amendments to lock them out which isn’t true, mind you I’m not the first incumbent in sports to return back unopposed, last year we witnessed this in UOC elections and it has been the same case in many Federations” . Simon Barigo the UBF General Secretary has returned for his 4th term making him the longest serving boxing federation executive in the same seat.
Other executive members who have returned unopposed are UBF treasurer Richard Muhumuza and Rose Kabwama, the head of women affairs.
Since David Agong 1989-1999 Muhangi is the first UBF president to secure a second term.
Others including Hajji Issa Kamoga, Vicky Byarugaba, Rodger Ddungu, Nyakana and Gimugu have only lasted for one term with others not even completing their mandated term due to political bickering.
