The Harambee Stars of Kenya played their first international match since November 2021 when they defeated Rwanda 2-1 in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Despite a brave fight, they lost 2-1 against Iran in Tehran on Tuesday night.
In the past, the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) has faced suspension or the threat of suspension by FIFA due to issues of governance and government interference in football matters.
However, the FKF has committed to adhering to FIFA’s rules and regulations to prevent such actions.
Despite being away from the international stage for two years, Kenya put up a solid defensive display in the first half, holding Iran to a goalless draw.
In the second half, Kenya’s captain Michael Olunga scored a stunning solo goal in the 51st minute, putting his team ahead and showing his exceptional talent.
However, two costly mistakes by Kenya led to Iran’s two quick-fire goals in the final 15 minutes of the game, resulting in Kenya’s defeat.
Despite this, the Harambee Stars demonstrated that they could compete with one of Asia’s strongest teams, and their defensive organization was impressive. Additionally, Olunga’s goal showcased their attacking potential.
The Harambee Stars will now focus on building on their performance and continue their preparations for upcoming international fixtures.
