Kenya women’s national volleyball team and host Cameroon are favorites for the 21st Edition of the Women’s Africa Nations Championship crown that serves off today at 11 am.
The week-long event is being held at the Yaounde Multi-purpose Hall.
Kenya, the 9-time African Champions are fresh from two sets of training camps; one in Morocco and the other in France.
Defending Champions Cameroon Lionesses have had a 3-month training camp in Cameroon, Slovenia, and Croatia.
In the last edition held in Kigali (2021), Cameroon defeated Kenya 3-1 to continue their dominance of the East African nation, Kenya has lost the final to Cameroon thrice in a row( 2017, 2019, and 2021)
12 teams are part of Africa’s prestigious competition and are separated into two groups.
Group A: Cameroon, Nigeria, Burundi, Mali, Algeria and Egypt
Group B: Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Uganda, Burkina Faso, and Lesotho.
The African Women’s Volleyball Championship is a sports competition for national teams, currently held biannually and organized by the African Volleyball Confederation, the African volleyball federation.
The top two teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship as the CAVB representatives.
The African championship will be crucial as it also acts in accruing points necessary to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
