The 2023 Nile Special Rugby Premier League has come to an end, with Stanbic Black Pirates emerging as champions after a dominant display in the final game of the season against Kampala Old Boys (KOBs) at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
Both teams were tied as joint-leaders with 75 points each, making the match a decisive encounter where the winner would take it all.
However, the game turned out to be completely one-sided, with the eventual victors completely dominating their opponents.
Ivan Magomu of Pirates scored three consecutive penalties, which gave his team a 9-0 lead going into halftime.
Despite Kobs’ Joseph Aredo making attempts to earn points for his side, his kicks went wide, leaving the visitors without any score to show for their efforts.
KOBs appeared to be re-energized and determined to get back into the game but their momentum was short-lived as Pirates quickly took control of the match.
Alex Aturinda of Pirates set up Timothy Odongo for the first try of the game after Kobs failed to capitalize on a ruck in their own territory.
With Magomu’s successful conversion kick, Pirates extended their lead to 16-0.
Kobs seemed to be struggling and demoralized as the game progressed, and this was evident when Conrad Wanyama kicked the ball deep into their territory.
The home side was unable to defend properly, allowing Desire Ayera to chase the ball down and score a try.
Magomu, who had been flawless with his kicking throughout the game, converted the try, further increasing Pirates’ lead.
Towards the end of the game, Karim Arinaitwe managed to score a try for Kobs, which was a small consolation for the home side.
However, this did not change the outcome of the game. Aredo’s successful conversion kick signaled the end of the match, with Pirates emerging as the winners with a final score of 23-7.
This victory not only earned Pirates their second league title but also ensured that they finished the second round of the 2023 season unbeaten.
Following the thrilling game, Pirates emerged as champions, finishing at the top of the table.
Heathens secured the second spot while Kobs, who suffered a loss in the final match, slipped down to third place.
The well-deserved victory will undoubtedly be a cause for celebration for both the players and fans of Pirates, who can bask in the glory of this remarkable achievement.
