GSU Men’s Volleyball Team set for continental comeback in Libya after a 4-Year hiatus

Nairobi, Kenya – 14 April 2025 | The General Service Unit (GSU) men’s volleyball team is making a bold return to the continental stage as they depart the country at 2:55 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, aboard an Egyptian flight to Tripoli, Libya. They are among Kenya’s three representatives at the 2025 CAVB Men’s African Club Championship, alongside Kenya Prisons and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

This marks GSU’s first appearance in the championship since 2021 when they finished in 7th place. After four years away, the former Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National League champions are heading to Libya with renewed determination and a hunger to re-establish their dominance

Speaking to Afrosports via phone, head coach Gideon Tarus struck an optimistic tone.

“We are ready for the championship. The team is going to play well and improve on our last edition’s position.”

Taurus emphasized that the squad is a well-balanced mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talents and that significant improvements have been made, particularly in the backcourt, an area they’ve heavily focused on during training.

“This group has experience, hunger, and a willingness to fight. We’ve worked on tightening our structure, especially at the backcourt. Every position has been sharpened with one goal to be better than before,” Tarus added.

GSU’s journey back to the top has not been easy. They missed out on past editions due to logistical hurdles, but their domestic performance has remained solid. In the most recent KVF season, they finished as runners-up, earning a deserved ticket to this year’s African showdown.

As they prepare to join some of the continent’s elite clubs in Libya, GSU carries the pride of a nation, the experience of past battles, and a fiery desire to climb higher than ever before.
