Nairobi, Kenya – 8 April 2025 | In a groundbreaking move for Kwale County’s sports development, 40 new volleyball coaches and referees have been officially certified by the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF). This significant achievement, which took place at the Kwale Cultural Centre, underscores the county’s dedication to fostering volleyball talent and ensuring that the region continues to grow as a competitive force in the sport.

The certification ceremony, which was attended by several prominent figures, including Madam Francisca Kilonzo, the CECM for Social Services, marks a crucial milestone for volleyball in Kwale The newly certified professionals were selected from each of the county’s 20 wards, with two candidates from every ward one for coaching and the other for refereeing ensuring that every corner of the county benefits from this initiative
The CECM for Social Services, Hon. Francisca Kilonzo acknowledged the importance of the county’s investment in sports, particularly volleyball. “The success of this certification program is not just a personal achievement for the 40 new coaches and referees, but a testament to the hard work of the county government and the Kenya Volleyball Federation. We are committed to supporting the development of volleyball at all levels, and this is only the beginning,” Kilonzo remarked.
The initiative was spearheaded by the leadership of Kwale Governor Mama Fatuma Achani, who sponsored the training for two people from each ward. This commitment to empowering local talent is a reflection of the county’s vision to develop world-class volleyball standards and create a pipeline for future volleyball professionals.

“We thank God for this achievement,” said Simon Kimuyu, Chairman of KVF Kwale Branch. “This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the support from our county government. The initiative, which saw 40 participants from all parts of Kwale trained and certified, is a step in the right direction. It gives our county a solid foundation for future success in volleyball.”
Kimuyu also emphasized the significance of collaboration to propel Kwale’s volleyball scene to new heights. “The success of this initiative is a product of collaboration. We have seen the positive results of working together with the county government, and we will continue to collaborate with the Kenya Volleyball Federation’s national office to enhance the quality of volleyball in Kwale,” he added.
The newly certified referees and coaches are set to play key roles in the county’s volleyball community. While the coaches will focus on developing the region’s talent, the referees will ensure that matches are officiated with integrity and professionalism. Both groups will be instrumental in raising the standard of volleyball in Kwale, preparing athletes for regional and national competitions.

Hon. Kilonzo also praised Bwana Fredrick Gitau, known as Pweza Man, for becoming the first international beach volleyball coach from Kwale after qualifying in the recent course held in Nairobi “Bwana Fredrick Gitau’s achievement is an inspiration to all of us. He has demonstrated that with dedication and commitment, anyone can reach great heights. His success is a proud moment for Kwale County,” Kilonzo stated.
Looking to the future, both the county government and KVF Kwale Branch are focused on continuing the momentum. “We are committed to supporting the development of our volleyball professionals and providing them with growth opportunities,” Kilonzo promised. “As a department, we will ensure that more referees and coaches are trained each financial year. This is part of our broader strategy to ensure that Kwale remains a leading force in volleyball.”
