UBA relaunches National Badminton League

After its failure to yield in the past years, the Uganda Badminton Association has relaunched the National Badminton League -on Saturday 28th January 2023-, with three classes, at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The classes are the National Super league which features the elites, the National Corporate league with six teams and the Schools league which will start after the resumption of school programs.

The inaugral launch of the badminton league happened in 2011 but hardly met any success until it’s re-launch in 2023, with the Association Chairperson Annet Nakamya promising a better version of the championship.

She said the league will help UBA to identify more talent and provide the players with a platform to check their performance levels every weekend.

The league games will happen bi-weekly on a round robin format implying teams will face each other on a home and away basis but with Lugogo as the neutral ground.

While clarifying on how the scoring will be done, Mugabi said that teams will face off in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles with a team that wins the tie, bagging three points and each team taking one point in case of a tie draw.

The levels all together are expected to stretch eight months in play, and this will give the players an engagement to look forward to as they prepare for other tournaments.

What the Players say

Husna Kobugabe – Player (Ndejje University)

“We lacked competition in the past years, so the league will help us play each other with competition and that way the federation can spot fresh talent.”

Fadila Shamika – Player (Kampala Badminton Club)

“I joined the league to have some experience this being the first time. We hope to give the other teams a competition they deserve, but above all, I want to have fun. The last league we had was in 2018, which was very competitive, we used to meet every weekend which gave us the motivation to train, but since their has been no competitions after that, the players became reluctant and lazy. The league will possibly change that, and bring us back to the sport, and also introduce new players.”
